Fitzcarraldo

The eccentric adventurer Fitzcarraldo set his mind on building an opera house in the middle of the Amazon. To generate the money for the insane construction, he tries his luck in the rubber trade. With the help of the brothel owner Molly, he buys a dilapidated steamer in order to develop the newly acquired rubber area. When rapids make it impossible to continue the journey, the entire ship has to be towed over a mountain by Indigenous people. The way Fitzcarraldo (Klaus Kinski) has the ship pulled over the mountain reflects not only the obsession of the main character, but also that of the director Werner Herzog.
