O Samba do Crioulo Doido

Kaserne 02./03.10.2021

Dance

O Samba do Crioulo Doido is Luiz de Abreu's powerful and autobiographical exploration of racial discrimination and its impact on the black, male, Brazilian body. By playing with stereotypical elements such as samba, carnival, and eroticism—which are always unmistakably associated with black Brazilians—the play mocks racist clichés and offers a humorous criticism of relationships of domination. First shown in 2004, this dance piece is performed by Brazilian dancer Calixto Neto who powerfully stages issues pertaining to black identity without heavy political overtones in this profound yet humorous solo.
