In 1750 in the Brazilian jungle, a priest is tied to a cross by Indigenous people and thrown down the Iguazú Falls. The Spanish Jesuit Father Gabriel is to replace him. With his oboe, he wins the favor of the Indigenous people and spreads the Christian faith among them. He is assisted by the former slave trader Rodrigo Mendoza, who is guilty of the murder of his half-brother. When the colony is sold to Portugal, chaos breaks out and Rodrigo takes up arms despite Gabriel's warnings.
