Film

A man (played by the director Nacer Khemir) returns home to Tunisia to bury his mother. To fulfill a promise to his father, he sets out to find traces of Muhyiddin Ibn 'Arabi, the great Islamic theologian, mystic and poet of the 13th century. His research into Muhyiddin's cosmopolitan and humane Islam, which today threatens to be forgotten, leads him through nine countries and to many encounters that reveal new facets of the great thinker. Looking for Muhyiddin is a deeply lyrical odyssey into the soul of Islam. Biography Nacer Khemir (*1948, Korba, Tunisia) is a writer, artist, and filmmaker. His literary work comprises a dozen publications. In 1982 and 1988, Nacer Khemir told stories from “1001 Nights” at the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris over a period of several weeks—a new story every evening, 25 hours of storytelling. After several short films, he made his first feature film in 1984, “Wanderers of the Desert,” in which he played the leading role of a teacher in a desert village. For this, he won the first award at the Film Festival of the Three Continents in Nantes, France, as well as the “First Film Award” at the Festival of Carthage JCC, Tunisia, and the Golden Palm Leaf at the Film Festival of Valencia, Spain. This film was to become the first in his renowned Desert Trilogy.  “Looking for Muhyiddin” is presented as part of the event series “Nacer Khemir - 1001 Nights in the Sahara Desert” at Stadtkino Basel.
