Open Call Basel Colonial

In the context of this year's Culturescapes Festival with its focus on the Sahara region, we are again conducting four postcolonial city walks, due to the great success of the event in 2021. For this purpose we are looking for contributions that shed light on the various aspects of Basel's colonial past.

As part of this year's Culturescapes Festival with the focus region Sahara, we will again conduct four postcolonial city walks due to the great success in 2021. The aim is to reveal the partly still hidden colonial history of our city and to show the (post)-colonial entanglements with the African continent, as well as their ongoing effects.

For this purpose, we are looking for contributions that shed light on the different aspects of Basel's colonial past, such as: the traces of slavery, the connection of Basel companies and families to former colonies in Africa, the handling of looted goods from the former colonies or the colonial heritage in today's society, etc.

We invite all interested persons to submit contributions for a postcolonial city walk. We also welcome experiential accounts, ethnographic narratives, and other living histories that do not come from an academic context.

The postcolonial city walk will provide a platform for diverse voices and will focus in particular on the perspectives of the marginalized. To this end, we welcome contributions from authors of all backgrounds and levels of experience.

Please send your contributions to opencall@culturescapes.ch by May 31, 2023.

We look forward to receiving your submissions!
